On January 15, 2005, Kip West and the town of Wakefield, Virginia faced a tremendous loss. Their friend, Marine Sgt. Jayton Daniel Patterson, was killed by an I.E.D. while serving in Iraq .
Out of his love and respect for Jayton, and after a few trips to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Kip wanted to do something for troops who came home severely injured so they would know their sacrifice is appreciated. To honor Jayton, Kip founded KWO, an organization dedicated to introducing severely wounded military men and women to the outdoors.
Not being a wealthy man, but being an outdoorsman, he conjured up an idea to work with these troops, bringing them closer to Mother Nature.
In 2010 Kip teamed up with Oliver North at Freedom Alliance. Annually, KWO and the well-known Freedom Alliance organization together host and organize the “Salute to our Heroes” event. This program enables 20 wounded warriors to take a week-long hiatus from hospital life for an all-expenses-paid outdoor adventure.
Participants are provided with bows and gear. KWO and team provide formal instruction on archery, hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities before they put their new skills to work in tournaments.
Following the introductory week, members of this special group travel with KWO for one entire year on dream archery hunts and fishing trips around the country.
